Western's College of Fine and Performing Arts is participating in the 2017 Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) – a one-of-a-kind survey that explores the lives of arts alumni nationwide. The survey will attempt to locate and include over 11,000 graduates in creative disciplines from WWU going back decades. Graduates in fine and performing arts, design, creative writing, industrial design, visual journalism, and related creative fields will be surveyed. This fall, all arts graduates of WWU will receive an email invitation to participate in the online survey. By verifying our alumni office has a current email address, alumni can be sure not to miss their chance to share their experiences and help shape the future of arts education across the country and at WWU.

Guangyu Meng says he arrived in the U.S. from China eager to begin studies at Western Washington University. But he was unsure how to start academic life. So, he joined the university's first-year interest group, a program that helps new undergrad students ease into their studies. "I joined because I had no idea what classes I should take, so I thought it would be helpful to have somebody lead me in my first quarter," says Meng. Prospective international students wary of starting their undergraduate education should consider first-year interest groups or learning communities that U.S. and Canadian universities offer. These groups allow freshmen with similar academic interests to enroll in the same schedule with 20-25 students, typically for the first quarter or semester.

Kulshan Cabin was completed in 1925. It was located ten miles up from Glacier and provided a nice launching point for those wanting to hike and climb the mountain. Western's Recreation Club sponsored an annual climb for many years. Photos here show the cabin and some summer hikers.

If you haven't heard, a solar eclipse will pass over the US on Monday. While Bellingham isn't in the path of totality -- you'd have to drive to Oregon or Idaho for that -- we will see a partial (88%) solar eclipse on at 10:21am Pacific Time on Monday. Remember to take safety precautions to protect your eyes if you want to watch!

Los Alamos, New Mexico-based UbiQD has reached an agreement with Western Washington University and the University of Washington to exclusively license groundbreaking luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) technology developed at the two schools. Unlike typical heavy opaque solar panels, this technology is partially transparent and lightweight, enabling windows or other surfaces, such as building facades, to become solar collectors. Developed at Western’s Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Center (AMSEC) and the University of Washington via funding from the National Science Foundation, Hunter McDaniel, founder and CEO of UbiQD, said the technology has the potential to disrupt the way we think about energy. http://ow.ly/BgAF30ep7Yo
