Costumes of Russia’s Wild East

In the early 1770s, the German naturalist and geographer Johann Gottlieb Georgi made two trips to Russia, traveling as far east as Siberia. His observations were later published in German as A Description of all the Nations of the Russian Empire, their Customs, Religion, Manners, Dwellings, Costume, and other Curiosities (1776-80). WWU’s Rare Book Collection contains a 1799 Russian edition of that text. Shown here are details from a few of its brightly colored illustrations.
